I,
stone,
fundamental element,
heart of the earth and earth myself
in the primitive form in which you chose me,
am within you, eternal matter.
I am the Place of myth, the House of the Fairies,
I am the Enchanted Mountain,
the bones of the sacred Earth,
dwelling of the deity – a deity myself –
I am the Navel of the world,
the Lotus of the universe.

As for the detractors, have no fear!
Some are perhaps inattentive,
but many are friends – admirers! –
And as for the remaining scoundrels,
don’t you think there is Providence?
Follow the advice of your friend Nievo:
Pay them no heed, and pass beyond!

So spoke the stone. And it was the Foremothers
who had spoken together with it.
The same matter. Mineral wisdom.

Some of Teri’s poems act as a counterpoint to her paintings or performances. Heightening feeling and vision nonetheless leaves the different modes of expression independent of one another: the poems are not meant to describe the other works, nor are the latter meant to illustrate the former. What matters is the balance, the happy union that is created, the synergy that arises, in that attempt to achieve the harmony and beauty at the heart of all Teri’s research.
