Giornata del Contemporaneo – eventi di ottobre 2009

taking part in the

DAY OF CONTEMPORARY ART

organised by

AMACI, THE ASSOCIATION OF ITALIAN CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUMS

fifth edition

On 3 October 2009 the Delta Centre for Art and Culture in Potenza joined the fifth edition of the DAY OF CONTEMPORARY ART, a national event organised by AMACI, the Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums.

The cultural centre organised several events in the city of Potenza, some already under way, which – together with others opened on this date for the occasion – continued throughout October, with free opening or visits to the spaces and events planned for 3 October 2009.

The 5 events organised by the Delta Centre for Art and Culture in Potenza:

EVENT 1

THE SORTED ROOM

With the work THE SORTED ROOM, part of Teri VOLINI’s complex participatory art project THE BEAUTIFUL EARTH, a space of about 20 square metres at piazzale Sofia 21, in the Poggio Tre Galli district of Potenza, was filled over several months with thousands of plastic bottles, to stress the need for a new consciousness towards the Planet, starting with everyday actions such as conscious separate collection and the proper reuse of the materials we use, if we do not want to be submerged by them and if we consider it a priority for the Earth to become healthy, clean and Green again.

The event is not limited to the Day of Contemporary Art but runs from May to October 2009, and can always be seen from outside through the shop window of the saturated space at piazzale Sofia 21, raised ground floor – or by appointment.

EVENT 2

LET US RE-FORM THE WORLD WITH WORDS OF LIGHT

In the fivefold Body Art and Public Art installation of 5 giant prints in as many locations in Potenza (Viale Dante opposite the escalator exit, Parco Europa Unita, Piazza Prefettura, Piazza XVIII Agosto, via Appia railway bridge), the Artist Teri Volini bears witness to the need for a new ethical order starting from Words, which through their vibration can influence our lives for good or ill. From 12 September to 12 November 2009. Open 24 hours a day.

Action in Public Art

Like most of the works the Artist has created since the mid-1990s – with a natural inner force that anticipated what later became a trend in contemporary art – this one too belongs to what is known as Public Art: an art form that goes beyond conventional places such as galleries or museums, exhibiting in public spaces with which it interacts, offering and receiving vitality and substance.

Action in Body Art

In Body Art the body is used as an expressive tool: the artist’s body becomes a creative event in itself; countering the commercial display we are used to, the artist’s body is the work of art itself; it demands attention, can provoke reactions and questions, and is never neutral. In this way an Action takes place in which the revolutionary force implicit in art is especially visible since, by “emphasising” reality, it sets off processes capable of bringing about personal and social awareness.

EVENT 3

H)EARTH-ART, Art for the Earth, by Teri Volini

On show at the Carpe Diem open space, via XX Settembre 9, Potenza: some of T. Volini’s Land Art works in harmony with Nature – large-format photographs of big installations and symbolic actions in Sicily, Basilicata, Calabria, Lombardy and Piedmont, from The Rhythm of Fire to The Invisible Real – The Web, from The Opening of the Heart to the Mudras and the Tentacular Invasions: the fruit of the search for, and sharing of, a new harmony with the Planet, and of a theoretical and practical commitment to respect for all beings and for the Earth. From 3 to 31 October 2009, during the venue’s evening opening hours.

Land Art for me means making works of art with and for nature, in an empathetic, synergetic action with it. With my works I wish to symbolise the pleasure and the necessity of that search for harmony and balance with the Earth which human beings seem to have forgotten, but to which, in their own interest, they will have to give great importance again.

During the month there will also be:
– meetings with the artist
– talks by the Delta Centre for Art and Culture on the alternatives of art, with image projections
– video screenings: The Web, The Rhythm of Fire, Air Water Earth Fire, Message in the Bottle

EVENT 4

THE MANDALA OF THE GREEN EARTH as a hanging sculpture

Sculpture – translucent disc, 130 cm in diameter: a great sacred circle in which the continents and oceans of Planet Earth have been redrawn by writing words coloured green and blue, patiently traced in its grooves by Teri Volini and the young pupils of two schools in the city, wishing the Earth fertility, rebirth, purity, renewal, protection, attention, love, respect…

1–30 October 2009, Biblioteca Nazionale, Potenza, Via del Gallitello
Information: Library 0971 54829; Delta Centre 0971 1800129 – 339 2414133

Through the making of a mandala, a first essential awareness can arise; the mandala helps us recognise and expand personal and universal values that are dormant or forgotten.

A writing mandala is made of a series of circles within which one can either “simply” write, or build shapes through writing.

It can be done in the traditional way, with coloured pens or markers, in circles and permanently, using luminous words of gratitude, love and peace.

The awareness of a deeply centred work and its high purpose activate a great energy, which spreads within us and all around us, bringing healing and hope to nature and to the world.

EVENT 5

7 ARTISTS FOR THE BEAUTIFUL EARTH

Using one of the possibilities offered by the web, a Virtual Gallery was created where one can easily enter and visit a double exhibition; in collaboration with Pio Vergura and Nazzareno Sileno, two evocative rooms were set up: the first hosts the most significant images of Teri Volini’s complex project The Beautiful Earth (February–October 2009); the second, the works of 7 artists particularly committed to protecting the environment – besides the five from Basilicata, Tina De Stefano, Michele Danzi, Vito Palladino, Teri Volini and Giusy Villano, there are an artist from Lombardy, Vera Benelli, working in Milan, and a Sicilian, Mariarosa Marcantonio, active in Belpasso, Catania.

In the works created for this occasion, the common thread is harmony with a vision of knowledge, love and protection of Nature: art’s new privileged possibility; an indispensable vision, given the state of Gaia, the Earth.

To visit the exhibition: Art in Defence of the Environment.

From September 2009 onwards
