October events and the AMACI Day of Contemporary Art

Begun in March in two schools in the city of Potenza, the land artist Teri Volini’s project “THE BEAUTIFUL EARTH” included a series of events in Participatory Art:
-
The first event was the Green Diary of Virtuous Actions for Mother Earth: every day, pupils of two schools in the regional capital wrote down actions carried out in favour of the environment, in a diary they had made by hand. The Diaries, filled with their small but meaningful actions, were exhibited at the end of the school year.
-
The second event, part of the “Maggio potentino” festival, was an exhibition of works by artists particularly sensitive to environmental issues, who created their Green Diary as a work of art, placing it in an installation of free technique and size.
-
The third event involved both the schools and the citizens. A twofold work was created:
-
The “Sorted Room” at the S. Maria school was a large transparent cube, 2 x 2 metres – representing a child’s bedroom, complete with furniture – completely filled with the bottles for recycling that the children brought to school every day.
-
The larger Sorted Room was created in a district of the city, Poggio Tre Galli. The residents themselves, with their children, filled a room with hundreds of plastic bottles until it was saturated.
In both cases the message stresses the urgent need for attention to separate collection and to the correct disposal of the materials we use, if we do not want to be completely submerged by them. The event had a happy ending: both Sorted Rooms were emptied at the end of May with a public celebration.
The fourth event centred on Peace with the Earth, with the Great Mandala of the Green Earth.
A symbolic representation of the world, in which the Planet – so mistreated by us – was redrawn by the Artist and the children of the two schools in green and blue, and the continents and oceans were formed through the circular writing of luminous words. In this way we promised the Earth respect, harmony, care, attention and love, and wished her to become healthy, clean and flourishing again.
