Peace Is Not Random
Non casuale è la Pace
SCULPTURE AND MONUMENT
…communicating through beauty the commitment to peace on Earth

The work PEACE IS NOT RANDOM refers to the desire for peace and to the urgency of realising it within ourselves and in the world.
Art, with its special language, can effectively communicate this urgency and underline the importance of a Culture of Peace, highlighting it in civil society as a primary value.
The title refers to the commitment needed to replace the deadly mode that still dwells in human beings with one of respect for life and love for all living beings.
The artist challenges the superficiality with which humans approach the question of peace, within themselves and in the world.
Through its presence in a public place, the work NCP aims to remind civil society that achieving peace cannot be left to chance.
The concept is presented through a simple and original analogy with Mikado (pick-up sticks), the well-known game in which a bundle of sticks is dropped at random onto a surface.
In the game of peace, by contrast, there is no room for chance: everyone, without exception, must work for peace-making, starting with the way we act in our own lives – in the personal and in the social sphere.
It begins with an apparent provocation: seven spears made of painted iron (or wood).
At first they are perceived as a symbol of aggression, but this perception changes radically once we notice that the spears are held in check by a ring of hands, symbolising friendship between human beings, agreement and goodwill.
The death instinct can then be neutralised and transformed by the Work of Peace.
As a powerful wish for these new ways, the spears are painted in the seven colours of peace: they embody energy, harmony and the joy of living.
The seven spears are set into a circular base representing the globe, surrounded by a procession of words that sign up to peace in the many languages of the world.
The project is developed as:
NCP SCULPTURE, to be placed indoors
NCP MONUMENT, to be installed in a city square
